Samsung India launched its full-touch slider phone, Samsung Ultra. It has partnered with the state-run telecom operators BSNL and MTNL to bundle phones for the third generation (3G) mobile services.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) rolled out 3G services and are bundling handsets with their services for which they have tied up with Samsung.
The full-touch slider phone, priced at Rs.27,500, is the only phone so far offering eight megapixel camera with AMOLED anti-scratch screen.
"With this launch, the company has a portfolio of four touch-screen phones in the Indian market and 12 out of total 50 phones of Samsung are 3G enabled," said Sunil Dutt, Country Head, Samsung Telecom division.
"We have a wide portfolio of 3G handsets including our touch-screen phones to help the Indian consumer experience the full benefit of 3G services in India. Some of our 3G handsets, in fact, are being manufactured at our Noida facility," said Jung Soo Shin, President and Chief Executive, Samsung India Electronics.
Almost 30 models of Samsung handsets are manufactured from this facility.
However, Samsung Ultra will be initially imported to the country from other manufacturing facilities.
Dutt said that the company expects 45 percent sales from multimedia phones by December 2009. Though there has been a little flattening of sales in 2008 due to slowdown, the company is expected to grow at 12-15 percent.
He also said that there is high growth potential in B- and C-class cities and also in rural markets.
