The All-India Consumer Price Index Numbers for Agricultural Laborers and Rural Laborers for May, 2009 increased by 7 points each to stand at 475 points for both the series. Point to point rate of inflation based on the CPI-AL and CPI-RL increased from 9.09% in April, 2009 to 10.21% during May, 2009 for both the series. Respective rates of inflation during May, 2008 were 9.11% and 8.84%.
The rise in index varied from State to State. In case of Agricultural Laborers, 4 States reflected an increase in index between 11 to 16 points; 11 States between 6 to 10 points and 5 States between 1 to 5 points. Punjab with 523 points topped the index table whereas Himachal Pradesh with the index level of 412 points stood at the bottom.
In case of Rural Laborers, the increase in index ranged between 11 to 15 points in 4 States, between 6 to 10 points in 9 States and  between 1 to 5 points in 7 States. Punjab with 523 points topped the index table whereas Manipur with the index level of 422 points stood at the bottom.
The Consumer Price Index Numbers of Punjab for Agricultural Laborers and Rural Laborers registered the highest increase of 16 and 15 points respectively mainly due to increase in the prices of wheat atta, moong dal, vanaspati, milk, vegetables & fruits, sugar, gur and tea leaf.
