The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) is organizing the National Awards function for the Micro, Small & Medium enterprises here tomorrow. Â The President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil will be the Chief Guest and present the National Awards to the successful MSMEs and Banks on this occasion. Â Shri Dinsha Patel, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for MSME will preside over the function.
National Awards were instituted in 1983 with a view to recognize the efforts and contribution of MSMEs. Â National Awards are given annually to the successful entrepreneurs, enterprises and banks.
This year’s National Awardees include 99 for MSME sector, 47 for Khadi & Village Industries and 19 for Coir Industries in different categories and 6 for Banks. The Awards are given to MSME for outstanding performance in entrepreneurship, research and development and quality, to honour one outstanding woman entrepreneur, one outstanding entrepreneur from SC/ST community and one entrepreneur from North Eastern Region.  Special recognition Awards are also given in all categories for excellent performance.  National Awards to Banks for excellence in MSE lending and excellence in lending to Micro Enterprises are also presented. The first, second and third National Awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/-, Rs. 75,000/- and Rs. 50,000/- respectively, a certificate and a trophy.
In addition, Special Recognition Award is given to the MSMEs in the form of a cash prize of Rs. 20,000, a certificate and a Trophy.
Research & Development Efforts in MSMEs
This category includes two Awards (First and Second) for Micro and Small Enterprises and two Awards (First and Second) for Medium Enterprises. First and second awards have gone to Micro and Small Enterprises of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Outstanding Efforts in Entrepreneurship
This category includes three National Awards (First, Second and Third), Special Awards at par with the First National Award to honour an outstanding woman entrepreneur, an outstanding entrepreneur from SC/ST, and an entrepreneur from North-Eastern Region, two (First and Second) awards for Medium Enterprises engaged in manufacturing and two (First and Second) awards for MSEs rendering services.
The First, Second and Third National Awards for Micro and Small Enterprise for 2009 have been awarded to entrepreneurs from Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh respectively. Â A woman entrepreneur from Kerala has won the Special Award under the category of women entrepreneurs.
Special award for SC/ST entrepreneur has gone to Gujarat. Â The Special Award for North-Eastern Region has gone to an entrepreneur from Assam. Â The First and Second National Awards for Medium Enterprises have been won by entrepreneurs from Punjab and Maharashtra respectively. Â The First and Second Awards for Service Sector have been won by entrepreneurs from Rajasthan and Karnataka respectively.

Quality Products
This category includes certain product groups selected each year. Â One National Award is given for each category for the selected products. Â Selection for the awards is made on the basis of a set criteria exclusively designed to evaluate outstanding efforts in entrepreneurship/performance of the MSMEs which include testing of raw materials, manufacturing practices, quality control standards, export performance, growth trends, pollution control, use of choice of technology, services offered to consumer etc.
National Awards for Quality Products 2009 are being given to eligible entrepreneurs for 10 products i.e. (1) Knitwear, (2) Electric Power and Distribution Transformers, (3) Lighting Fixtures, (4) Plastic Processing Machinery, (5) Hospital Furniture, (6) Fruit and Vegetable Processed products, (7) Ceramic Sanitary Ware, (8) Plastic Auto Components, (9) Adhesives  &  (10) Ladies’ and Men’s Leather Footwear.
National Awards to Banks for excellence in MSE lending and excellence in lending to micro enterprise will also be presented.
With a view to encouraging the Banks to enhance credit flow to the MSE sector, a Scheme of National Awards to the Banks in recognition of their outstanding performance in financing and micro and small enterprises sector was introduced from the year    2001-02.  Further, the National Awards for Excellence in lending to Micro Enterprises have also been instituted from the year 2005-06.
The Awards are in the form of three trophies, along with certificates, to the best performing banks. Two trophies are given to the major banks while the third trophy goes to one of the Associate Banks of State Bank of India, as a Special Award.

Awards for Khadi & Coir Sectors
47 Awards are being given for Khadi & Village sector. 19 Awards are being given to entrepreneurs for their outstanding performance in production and export of various coir products.
