Exchange Description: Using disruptive technique we have developed a powerful LED based lighting kit for use by hawkers and urban poor for our Rent A Light project.Our portable, lighting kit consists of a 8W,12V, DC, LED bulb which gives out powerful light of >700lumens or /200Lux@ 1 Metre (eqvt to a 60W incandescent bulb) at a wide beam angle of >140 degrees.The bulb has a unique light engine and has a plastic housing which is unbreakable .It has a life of over 25,000 hours(>10 years).
This lighting kit is rugged and is equipped with 12V rechargeable battery capable of giving light for >8hours on full battery.The battery is chargeable through 220V, AC mains and also through solar panels(optional).This light is equipped with a 1.1mtr long and flexible goose neck for hanging the LED bulb and is connected to a battery box with inbuilt charger/controller for charging battery.
The electronic circuitry has protection against deep discharge, overcharging , reverse polarity etc to enhance battery life .
The cost of the lighting kit is Rs2000 with battery.
Contemporary products from D'light, Duron , Selco are no doubt good but lack in respect of the intensity of light they give out only (100-300 lumens for LED bulbs ).Our product on the contrary provides strong light of >600 lumens for longer hours enabling the hawker to display his wares in good light .He thus can attract more customers resulting in increased income. Besides the hawker can take home the lighting kit for study, cooking etc when the power from grid fails(which is often the case in India).So there is no limit to the number of hours a person can use our kit
Prototypes of the product is ready and currently undergoing test marketing.The initial response is very good and promising.To begin with 10,000 lighting kits/year can be easily rented out @Rs15/day . Delhi has over 300,000 hawkers with no access to grid power.
Besides above we plan to market LED bulbs as a replacement for CFL's in homes.Estimated market size is 10million bulbs on a conservative note.
The use of LED for lighting is also a potential carbon credit minter. If a incandescent bulb/kerosene lamp is replaced by a LED Home Light it avoids one ton of carbon emissions in 3 years, which is equal to US$ 30 in terms of carbon credits. Ten million or one crore LED Home Lights will save 10 million tons of carbon emissions or in dollar terms, US$ 300 million!
We require Rs1-1.5 crore working capital to initially fund our project. Equity or profit sharing can be offered.
