Ministry of Tourism compiles monthly estimates of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) and Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) from tourism on the basis of data received from major airports. Following are the important highlights regarding FTAs and FEE from tourism in India for the year 2010.
Performance of tourism sector in 2010 as compared to 2009 was much better as may be seen from details given below.
Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs)
- FTAs during the Month of December 2010 was 6.55 lakh as compared to FTAs of 6.46 lakh in December 2009 and 5.34 lakh in December 2008.
- There has been a growth of 1.4 % in December 2010 over December 2009 as compared to a growth of 21.0% registered in December 2009 over December 2008. The decrease in growth rate in December, 2010 as compared to previous month of 2010 was mainly due to flight disturbances in Europe and other countries during December, 2010.
- FTAs in India during 2010 were 5.58 million with a growth rate of 9.3% as compared to the FTAs of 5.11 million and growth rate of (-) 3.3% during 2009.
- The 9.3% growth rate in FTAs for 2010 over 2009 for India is much better than UNWTO’s projected growth rate of 5% to 6% for the world during the same period.
Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) from Tourism in Indian Rupee terms and US $ terms
- FEE from tourism during the month of December during 2010 were Rs. 7039 crore as compared to Rs. 7042 crore in 2009 and Rs. 5083 crore in 2008.
- FEE in Rs. terms did not observed change in December 2010 as compared to December 2009 while the change was 38.5% in December 2009 over December 2008.
- FEE from tourism in Rupee terms during 2010 were Rs.64889 crore with a growth rate of 18.1%, as compared to FEE of Rs.54960 crore with a growth rate of 8.3% during 2009 over 2008. Thus the growth rate in 2010 was more than double of that observed during 2009.
- FEE in US $ terms during the month of December 2010 were US $ 1558 million as compared to US $ 1510 million in December 2009 and US $ 1046 million in December 2008.
- The growth rate in FEE in US$ terms during December 2010 was 3.2% as compared to December 2009, and 44.4% during December 2009 as compared to December 2008
- FEE from tourism during 2010 were US $ 14193 million as compared to US$ 11394 million during 2009 and US $ 11747 million during 2008.
- The growth rate in FEE in US$ terms during 2010 was 24.6% as compared to a decline of 3% in 2009 over 2008. Therefore, in US$ terms, also growth rate observed in 2010 was positive and substantially high.
