Online fund-raising for NGOs and a hair-raising, nail-biting finish

The night of January 31st, I stayed awake till midnight watching almost a minute-by-minute progress of an online fund-raising initiative for NGOs on globalgiving.com. My interest in this was sparked after a request from Seva Mandir to contribute and to spread the word about this “Giving Challenge.”

It was meant initially to be a United States fund-raiser but eventually became a global one. Different organizations had put in their fund need pitch on the site (Seva Mandir’s was for non-formal education for tribal children; others were, for example, 300 fuel-efficient cooking stoves in Honduras, routing out poverty for Cambodian children, education for 900 rural girls in Burkina Faso, invest in International Development Leaders). It was a very interesting mix of development action ideas. The contest went something like this: You raise the maximum number of donations (there are conditions like unique donations, etc.), you get all the money you raised, plus the top four projects will get a cash award of US$ 50,000 each!I am sure every one of the fund-raisers went around the globe stoking passions to get people to contribute. In Seva Mandir’s case, I found a series of requests from various people in my inbox.

The real fun (just like a nail-biting 20-20 cricket match) was on this night, Indian time. The contest was to close at 3 pm US Eastern Time (around 1 at night in India). Between 10.30 pm and 11.30 pm as I watched closely, there was at least one donation being added to at least one of the projects of the top five I was watching (http://givingchallenge.globalgiving.com/dy/amgive/leaderboard/ag.html is the link I was looking at) with every screen refresh I did (sometimes even three per minute). Seva Mandir (SM) was on the top of the table, challenged closely by the Cambodia project (1475 donations to SM and 1474 to Cambodia), and then, all of a sudden, the tally was 1490-1492 against SM, soon 1501-1496 in favour of SM, with similar contests going on between the next three projects as well.

Well, I went to sleep. Next morning I logged on to check the site out of sheer curiosity. Here are the final results: Cambodia - 1710, Honduras - 1698, International Development Leaders (USA) - 1661, Burkina Faso - 1635, Seva Mandir – 1576.

Cambodia did marvellous pinch-hitting in the slog overs, while Seva Mandir, like the good Indian cricket team, probably sent an off-form Rahul Dravid to play his forward and backward defensive shots in the final overs!

Global Giving and the Giving Challenge
GlobalGiving is a Web-based online fund raising mechanism that helps development projects and charities around the world raise funds by connecting to a large pool of donors. Projects are referred to GlobalGiving through its network of project sponsors, reputable organizations that vet projects for eligibility and provide references for projects’ work. In addition, GlobalGiving periodically offers competitive opportunities for anyone to submit their projects for consideration.

The recent competition that GG hosted was the “Giving Challenge” that ran between December 13, 2007 and January 31, 2008. The ‘Challenge’ before projects that were listed (anyone living in the US could list a project that really needed funds) was to raise the maximum number of donations, online of course, to support the project. The top four would be awarded US$ 50,000 each. In order to generate momentum, the Challenge also had periodic awards for ‘maximum donations in a day’. A leader board on the Website gave real-time updates on progress made by the top projects.

Honduras, after leading earlier in the week and after having fallen to No.5 earlier on January 31st, probably used its time-zone advantage to make a final surge. The US-based project, of course had the same advantage. Burkina Faso is like the South African cricket team—never the very best, but seldom far from the top! Indians went to sleep at midnight, with less than two hours to go before close, and see what happened.

Seva Mandir is a rural development organization based in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Established in the mid-1960s to work among the rural and tribal communities of Udaipur district, Seva Mandir now works in more than 600 villages in the region.

The lighter vein apart, what prompted me to write this note is a real thought/concern about what it holds for us in the “development” sector, with a real need to raise funds. “Technology”, “competition”, “pitch,” etc have already become the buzzwords, replacing “bleeding hearts.”

PS: Seva Mandir despite being fifth in number of donations is second in terms of funds raised (close to US$ 42,000). Honduras, despite its second position, raised only two-thirds of that—about $29,000. But since they have a larger donor base they take the $50,000 award as well!

PS2: We still do not have many online fundraising consultants! Get a room, get some good bandwidth and start off! At least one will not need to call oneself a Consultant—”Social Entrepreneur” is just about anybody these days.

Liby Johnson has worked with rural development organizations in various parts of India for over a decade. Presently, he is a resource person to small development organizations, providing management support. Fund-raising has been and continues to be an area of interest.

Rehabilitation for the Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Mugaiyur Block
written by A.Susainathan, November 16, 2010
Poverty, one of the root causes of many evils characterizes the interior villages of Mugaiyur Taluk. In these villages, due to lack of nutritious food and proper health care facilities, many children become victims and they are totally sidelined by the normal children. “Quarter-human being; Half-human being; ¾th human” are some of the words harshly used by normal children for teasing when a handicapped child appears at public places. It is atrocious and basically inhuman. It is for them “ARMDS” intends to serve. Ever since its inception, ‘ARMDS’ has notably rendered its services to improving the living conditions of the poorest children in the target area of 50 interior villages. In order to uplift these 37 CP/MR children through establishing a hostel, we produce this project.

1.1.1 Statistics from our survey:

S.L.NoOn handicapped childrenNumber
1Total handicapped children in our target 50 villages507
2Those at low percentage of disability134
3Those between 60-70% of disability124
4Those between 70-80% of disability167
5Those between 80-90 of disability082
6.CP/MR in our villages037

1.1.2 Why Handicap?

In our survey in these 50 villages, we were astounded to see a 37 CP/MR and 507 disabled .The reasons identified are here below:

1.Malnurition: Due to lack of vitamin constituents, they become handicap ( 72%)
2. Polio: Due to lack of proper care and awareness of parents ( 10%)
3.Congenital: By birth they are CP/MR. ( 12%)
4. Orthopedic/accident: It is identified as 8%:

1.2 Aim and objectives

1)To uplift the living conditions of the 37 CP/MR children in our villages through establishing a hostel.
2)To alleviate the sufferings of the CP/MR children who are sidelined in the society.
3)To offer a helping hand to the CP/MR to stand on their feet by providing regular therapy.
4)To foster human education and the help required therewith to the CP/MR children.
5)To empower CP/MR children and train them, to be independent.
6)To guide and help CP/MR children in their stuanding on their own, facing life and steps towards progress.
7)To enable CP/MR to shine in equal footing with other normal children.
8)To bring in these children an identity and instill in them the feeling that the world cares for them through our genuine love and establish a secure future for them.

1.3 Problems faced by Disabled Children

As highlighted in the introduction itself, these CP/MR and disabled children are considered as sub-human; low human and human in the lesser degree. This kind of consideration pains any one. This is the sad situation prevailing in our targeted villages. Here we highlighted a few problems as experienced by these unfortunate children during our survey.

a)Sense of insecurity:
These children do not feel that the world cares for them. They feel people around are antagonistic.

b)Feeling of alienation:
These children do not feel that people have genuine understanding looking at their sorry plight. Further, there is not a single organization that has done anything for them. That’s why ‘ARMDS appeals to you immediately after your support for further support and help

c)Lack Respect:
They are not respected in society, even by their pears

d)Lack food and hygiene:
As they cannot stand on their feet alone, and financial mishaps of the family has pushed them to starve often. They are attacked by diseases often because they lack nutritious food, hygiene and health care.

e)Complexes:
•Fear complexion engulfs these disabled and CP/MR children.
•They lack confidence.

f)Attitude of society influences them:
As they are cruelly treated, they develop a kind of hatred towards the society. Hence they are not able to express ideal attitudes, motivation,…

g)Future – A question mark:
Due to poverty, inability of the parents to carry them to school daily as they are daily laboures, they are denied of education. Unless the school is located closer to their accessibility, they are unable to attend to their schooling. Ultimately future becomes a question mark for them. These are some of the feelings and problems nurtured by these disabled and the CP/MR children in this cruel surrounding depicted in our recent survey.

1.4 Problems faced by the parents:

1.Poverty :
•It is the vital problem of most parents.
•So they are not able to send their children to school.
•Not able to provide adequate healthy nutritious food, leading to attack of pernicious diseases.
•So they remain ignorant. They neither have any skill nor feel the necessity of offering their children any skill training. Thus they remain in dark, not only the parents and the disabled and the CP/MR children, but the whole society.

2.Lack of Availability of schools nearby:
•If the school is nearby they’ll be able to carry their disabled
child/children and put them daily in the school. If not, what shall be
their alternative? It is just stop them from schooling.
•This attitude is still worse, i.e., if the girl child is CP/MR or disabled they
consider it as their fate.
•Some schools are 20 to 25 kms away from these villages.

3.Unemployment
•They do not get job daily except in the recent years.
•They starve if there is no work.

4.Lack skilled Training:
As most of the disabled parents are illiterate, they do not have skilled training to do variety of jobs. They solely rely on rains and do agricultural works.

These are some of the problem faced by these poor villages in these backward villages.

1.5 How the project is going to be implemented?
The implementation of the establishing the hostel for CP/MR children will involve four phases.

Phase 1 : Selection phase:

In this phase, the 37 CP/MR children will be recruited on the following criterion.

Phase : 2 Establishment of Hostel :

1.In this phase, a building with required facilities will be rented.
a)It is in Mugaiyur as part of the office of ARMDS.
b)It will have basic facilities like water, transport, toilet,..
c)Two separate halls will be demarcated for boys and girls.
d)There will be a woman warden who will act as “mother” to these children.

2.Two cooks will be appointed to see to giving of nutritious food.

Phase : 3 Life in the Hostel

Step 1 : Role of Warden:

a)The warden will serve as a mother to these children.
b)The daily menu (list of food items to be provided) will be decided by the warden in consultation with the coordinator of ARMDS. This is to facilitate the proper intake of nutritious yet decent food.
c)The warden will act as a link among parents, ARMDS members, and Day care Unit.
d)She will take the sick children to the nearby hospital if they fall sick.
e)She will give a periodic assessment to ARMDS coordinator about each CP/MR child.

Step 2: Role of cooks:

1.They prepare delicious food for the CP/MR children.
2.They cooperate with the warden in caring out the responsibilities.
3.They will also maintain order, cleanliness, hygiene in the hostel.

Step 3 : Role of ARMDS coordinator.

Although all the members of ARMDS will enable in caring for each CP/MR child, the coordinator will monitor the administration. The coordinator will appraise the board as to the developments, difficulties and the future plan for the hostel.

The coordinator is directly in charge of sending a report once in every 3 months.

Step 4 : Role of parents:

1)They could visit their children only once in a month. The second Saturday and Sunday is allotted for that. This is to help children concentrate in their studies.
2)They would not meet children unnecessarily, unless during emergency like function, death, treatment,…

Step 5 : Life in the hostel:

1)It will be a happy home to the children.
2)The children will be helped in their treatment
3) Lot of interaction will be provided to keep children active and alive.
4)At the weeks end, to break the monotony they will be taken out for site seeing/ picnic hiring a vehicle.

All this would make children happy. Thus we will be able to alleviate their sufferings and bring them to the normal fold soon.

Step 6 : Kitchen Garden:

1.The children will do little works that permit them to do without over
straining their body.
2.They will maintain kitchen garden. The bathing water, water from the kitchen, water for washing, drainage … will be used to for the kitchen garden. This is to prevent wastage of water and use it well in growing green vegetables – containing vitamin A… . Thus we intend to reduce sicknesses.

1.6 Expected outcome

1.This project will show sign of hope, positive attitude and optimism in these 37 CP/MR children.
2.They learn to stand on their feet and thus have an image and identity of their own.
3.This project will provide special education to the 37 CP/MR children
4.It will cast out the complexes in the CP/MR children.
5.It will up lift their life style and reduce their pains.
6.They learn to solve many problems and face the reality of life.
7.A secured future is guarantied by this project.

Dear sir/mam,

Greetings from RURAL WOMEN DEVELOPMENT TRUST,

Subject:- help to ngo for making a Dalit Arunthathiyar children and women development

Background:
:RWDT- Rural Women Development Trust is the registered women headed organization at Salem. It was started on 2000 by dedicated persons among the dalit Arunthathiyar community. It was registered under trust act on 2005. We are working for Arunthathiyar community which is most eliminated, ill treated and crushed by the upper caste peoples. They are treated as untouchables not only by the upper caste people also by other dalit communities. So the Arunthathiyar community is called as Dalits among the Dalits. They are mainly going to farm works, rope making, brick works and stone quarries. They are mostly violated by upper caste peoples and also owners.
RWDT is working with a vision of Education and Empowerment of Marginalized Dalit among Dalits wanted to start similar development activities in Salem rural blocks. Initially started working with women by organizing them as self help groups (SHG), later the work is extended to children particularly school going children, child laborer and bonded laborer children. Now we are working in 30 Arunthathiyar villages in Tharamangalam, Nangavalli, Edappadi, Sankari, Konganapuram, and Veerapandy blocks.of Salem district of Tamilnadu. And our focus was on educating the school children and eradicates child labor in these areas. Now RWDT is also establishing the village women societies because once the women get some education and become economically self sufficient, their children would get proper education
VISION
:Envisions a society wherein the deprived people (Arunthathiyar) including those of the Dalit are empowered to enjoy their rights and socio - economic status at par with the mainstream communities."
MISSION:" Ensuring that the children and women have better stakes in the society, which is facilitated through education, community based organization (CBO) and participation and development assistance.

Thank you,
With regards,

Child rights and women rights

We are working at Dalit Among Dalit Women and child development work.

Arunthathiyar(Chakkiliar) are one of the three main subgroups of Dalits or SC(scheduled caste) in TamilNadu,India. The other two subgroups are Paraiyar and Pallar

Arunthathiyar Dalits are most oppressed among the dalits. They live in miserable conditions working as manual scavengers, cobblers(shoe repair), agricultural labourers, construction workers. Arunthathiyar are treated as untouchables not only by the upper caste but also by the other Dalit subgroups. Hence they are called Dalit among Dalits.

Year 2001 population census of India

Total population in state of TamilNadu= 62,405,679(about 62.5 million)

Twenty (20% ) of TamilNadu's population is Dalit or SC

Among Dalits, total population of Arunthathiyar dalits is about 80 lakhs

Geographical Location of Arunthathiyar dalit

Eighty lakhs(80,00000) of Arunthathiar dalit of TamilNadu state, live mostly in western districts namely- Coimbotore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Namakkal , Karur, Dindigul, Nilgris, and Madurai.

Various names and Languages spoken by Arunthathiyar

In TamilNadu, Arundhathiyar Dalits are also called as Chakkiliar, thoti, pagadai, panchama, puthurai vannan vettan , adi andra, adi Karnataka, adi dravida and madari . In Karnataka state, they are known as Madiga, Mangs .

At home they mostly speak Telugu or Tamil, but go Tamil schools and follow Tamil customs.

Key challenges faced by Arunthathiyar Dalit

Untouchability , Physical violence ,Verbal abuse

Dominant upper caste people do not allow Arunthathiyar Dalits to enter into village main temple for worship.

Arunthathiyar are forced to live in segregated colonies called as cherry (in rural areas) or slums( in urban areas). They have separate water wells, and burila grounds. In rural areas, they are not allowed to touch or draw water from public village wells, or public water pipes. They have separate wells. In hotels and tea shops, they are discriminated and served in separate tumblers(or glasses) and plates. These untouchability practices degrade, shame and suppress their spirits and fill them with feelings of inferiority, insult and humiliation. According to SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989, such untouchability practices are punishable offense. In spite of the legal ban, the upper caste people continue to practise untouchability. When the Arunthathiyar Dalit stand up for their rights and protest against the practice of untouchability, upper caste people threaten and intimidate them with physical violence , and use caste based insulting comments and degrading sexual remarks.

Sexual abuse and exploitation in workplace

Arunthathiyar dalit women work in agricultural farms, brick factories and stone quarry .In their workplace, many women have to endure sexual harrassment and abuse from the dominant upper caste landlords and employers. Arunthathiyar women live in constant fear of sexual violence

Bonded Labour

When Arunthathiyar Dalit families have difficult financial times to feed the familiy, they get loans for high interest from the upper caste landlord/employer. With their minimum low wages, every month they pay back their accumulating interest . Even after several years they are never able to repay their principal loans . So the husband and wife and children go into bonded labour and start working for low wages to get out of the debt.

Manual Scavenging

In Tamilnadu 95% of scavengers are Arunthathiyar dalit. Among scavengers, 33% of them are women.

Their work involves manual cleaning of open toilets, sweeping streets and public places. Some of them work in cremation grounds burning the dead bodies.

Poverty

Only 10 % of Arunthathiar population own a small piece of land. Most of them are landless labourers. They work as temporary coolies for minimum low ages in agricultural farms, stone quarries, brick industry. Few months every year they are jobless and hence migrate to urban areas and other villages in search of jobs.Due to extreme poverty they do into debts.

Alcoholism is a major social problem among both men and women. About 90% of Arunthathiyar Dalit adults are addicted to alcohol. About 60% of their daily wages are spent on consumption of alcohol, which leads to deterioration of health, negligence of child care and continuation of poverty.

Girls marrying early -To escape from sexual abuse in workplace, many Arunthathiyar dalit teenage girls are forced to marry at very young age of 13- 18 years . Due to lack of education and health awareness , they get pregnant soon after marriage in very young age Their health often deteriorates very quickly because of repeated pregnancies at closer intervals. Arunthiyar girls are illiterate and unskilled, and the cycle of poverty continues into the next generation.

Desertion of wife is common and a customary practice among Arunthathiyar Dalit men. After abandoning their wife, men are are free to marry another women. This results in many broken families and single mothers raising their children in poverty.

Illiteracy

Only 1.75 % people of Arunthathiyar community are literates while 98.16% are illiterates. Only 0.16% of the people have at least completed their 10th std in school. Because of the poor socio economic status of the community the children are very rarely sent to elementary school. Even when they go, they drop out of school. Most of the children in the rural areas work as bonded labourers in the agricultural farms of the upper caste. Children in the urban areas work as temporary workers in restaurants / hotels, automobile mechanic shed, and garages Even with much difficulty if they complete 12 std, they are unable to pursue college education due to poor economical stability.

School drop out

Children are teased and taunted in schools and streets by other upper caste children because their parents are performing low menial jobs such as scavenging and shoe repair. The abusive remarks are hurtful and little children refuse to go to school. Sometimes due to poverty and low socio economic status , the children are not sent to school or drop out of school in middle school.
Lack of unity
Arunthathiyar community does not have any political identity. they are depend on local upper community farm owners for their daily needs.

We want Funding Support for Muslim and Dalit Childran in Western Rajasthan
written by MAHILA MANDAL BARMER AGOR(MMBA), August 23, 2010
Greetings from Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor(Rajasthan India)

We are pleased introduce ourselves as a grassroots development organization working in Barmer,Jaisalmer , Jodhpur and Jalor district of Rajasthan India for the past twenty years. We are registered under Rajasthan State Societies Act on 25th Jan.1991. We are entitled to get foreign contribution under FCRA Act, which is applicable from 1999.

Because of our intensive and committed effort in addressing the problem faced by rural women, our organization was accredited by National Women Commission for its excellence service on 8th March 1998 to Ms. Mumtaz Ben, Chairperson of Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor (MMBA) from the gracious hand of then Prime Minister of India Sh. Deve Gowdaa.

For years, this district has its own setbacks in many fields. Though Barmer and Jaisalmer district has tourist attraction, prevailing scattered demographic in dessert region, social structure and yearlong customs hampers many developmental activities.

There are many sects of people who have been kept neglected and sidelined from the main stream of the society. Of these, state of people belonging to minority community is worse. To be specific, women of this community are totally left unnoticed. For centuries, minority women have been dominated and confined to household works.

Insight look into the water problem affecting the life of Muslim women:

Search for potable water is the core issue of all the prevailing inadequacies. To fetch water from the wells, normally it will be responsibility of the women to fetch the water. For this and it is commonly seen that they use to carry pots in their heads. In addition, in order to save the time, they carry at least two to three pots at a time, which is kept one after the other. They are perfectly trained in this art right from when they are 5 years old. It is so sad plight to see the young innocent girls carrying pots in their heads to fetch water.

For instance, if a person consumes at an average 15 litres (this is minimal requirement) of water per day and if a family consists of six member that makes 90 litres of water per day. To fetch this 90 liters of water, if they carry three pots, bigger one 15 litres and the smaller one 10 liters and again the smaller one 5 litres that makes 30 litres of water in one trip. In short, they have to go at least three trips in a day to meet the daily requirement of water. At the same time, if the size of the family is large, in order to reduce number of trips they do not have option but to send their little girls to fetch water.

Per trip they have to travel at an average of 8 Km (both up and down). In an average, per day they have to travel more than 20-25 Km. One can easily get clear picture how laborious task performed by these women and if they fell sick then automatically looks for girl child in that family. If they have donkey in their house, it somehow reduces their workload, but, even to fetch water-using donkey, they will send their girl child.

Education opportunities to Muslim Women

This is yet another neglected area and there is least scope for women in this area. When compared to another community, female literacy rate of this community is at abyssal. Because of this, it has multi-dimensional effects in the life of rural women. Lack of infrastructure and insecurity of parents to send their girl children to school, restricts the education opportunities of girl children. Girl children of this community, assured for maximum of fifth standard. Rest of their life, they are limited in their household works.

Ignorance about the importance of education to girl children is yet another challenging factor in this community. To overcome this, MMBA would like to take initiative exclusively for girl children where they are assured education up to tenth standard. This we would like to do through organizing residential camp at cluster level. Through this camp, girl children belonging to minority community will be admitted. Even to admit these girl children in residential camp itself a challenging task to MMBA. Sensitization meeting will be organized with the parents of these children.

Economic status of Muslim Women

Though women support their family by doing some occasional work, they are not recognized for what they are contributing. They always occupy the second slabs in any society. Frontier districts of Barmer and Jaisalmer are world famous for embroidery work. This has very good market at the international market. Normally, villagers do this embroidery work in houses, which is fully controlled by intermediary at the village level who will be making huge profit. Minority women are largely engaged in this work, which assures hardly Rs.9-15 per one and half square feet that takes at least three to four days to complete the design in hand.

Even the above mentioned income is not steady because of their routine work in fetching water. Girl children are also engaged in this embroidery work and they contribute to some amount to support the family. Again this small-assured contribution is challenged and hampers the economic status when any one of the female members fell ill.

When the above mentioned is the prevailing situation, one can very easily understand the status of disabled people belonging to minority community where are largely dependent on other family members.

State of girl children of this worse when compared to another community. It is common seen any dessert belt that girl children use to sit in donkey and travel at least 5-10 Km to fetch potable water. When this measured in terms of money, these children contribute huge part. At the same time, their brother's will be happily going to school with their friends.

Health status and its impact on social status of Muslim women

As stated in previous paragraph, in villages it will be the responsibilities of women to fetch water and no matter how long it is. At the same time, in order to save their time, they send their children, particularly girl children, to fetch water. Because, it is common mindset that prevails among villagers that baby boy is the asset to the families and they are the primary income sources for the family and on the other side, girl children is merely treated as liabilities. Because of this tedious work, girl children become victim of malnutrition and gradually get much disease.

Above mentioned is seen vigorously in minority community. In this community, girl children are merely used to satisfy the sexual appetite of male dominant. Marriage at tender age, mis-matched marriage and perverse ties is commonly seen in this community. At the time of deciding marriage, mother has zero influence to decide the marriage of her child. She knows that this is the type of atrocities purposefully imposed on her child, but her words were never given importance.

In addition, it is common that when women are not used to discuss with their husband about the problems, be it health or mental or anything. When this is the condition with women, one can easily imagine the condition of adolescent girls. If only their mother finds time to discuss, the health problems of their girl children and the solutions are not arrived. It is common in village that when the girl children share the difficulties in fetching water with their mother, as a mother she is left no option but to reciprocate the same on what she was taught from her mother and console and prepares her girl child to accept the fate.

In the span of twenty years, MMBA actively took initiative to address the problem faced by women belonging to minority community. Because of constant effort, issues relating to this community were limelighted in national main stream through India Today and Aaj Tak. We have also took effort at district level to put pressure at policy level. Despite our constant effort, we feel that there is still need to done concretely to bring changes in this community.

Above-mentioned are the compilations of status of minority women. We tried our best to give you the clear picture of status of minority women in Barmer and Jaisalmer district without exaggeration. We would like to delineate a clear plan of action to address the above-mentioned true status of this community. We find this is feasible, with your constant support. If you really find that there is a need to work exclusively for Muslim women, kindly do let us know.

Looking forward for your positive reply
With Warm Regards

Sincerely,

(Mrs. Mumtaz Ben)

Requesting for support/sponcership/partnership with those organization want to work mountain community.
written by Dr. Surendra Prasad Dimri, August 10, 2010
Respected Sir,
Greeting from Badrish Kirti Jan Kalyan Samiti,(BKJKS).
Badrish Kirti Jan Kalyan Samiti,(BKJKS) is a society registered as a non Governmental (not-for profiting making)organization under society registration act 21-1860.Foreign Contribution regulation act,1976, and section 12A &80 G of Indian Income Tax act 1961.Working in the remote and inaccessible areas in Uttarakhand, a province in Indian Himalayas, the area we work is remote and underdeveloped part of Uttarakhand. This is a state which itself has been historically neglected and marginalized within India.
Geography has determined the life condition of these villages in many important ways, Life in the mountains is difficult-to fetch water and collect firewood requires climbing up and down narrow trails over long distance. The challenge of the terrain has complicated the serving of the area.
Most families in the area where we work live off animal husbandry and farming their own small plots. This is sufficient for sustaining themselves only for eight and nine month of the year, during the rest of which they have to by their food. Apart from selling their small quantities of milk and vegetables on the market, about a four hour jeep drive way, there are very few opportunities to earn cash income. Since 1985 BKJKS has worked some of most disadvantaged people of society. It is education more then any thing else that help people take control of their own lives. Yet in India millions of children are unable to complete their schooling because of poverty of their situation, for this reason BKJKS sees education as the single most effective way to helping communities get out the poverty. Many school children from poor backgrounds in India drop out of education by the age of ten. Often their parents are illiterate themselves; their local school are very poor, or their parents need them to work to earn extra income for the family. Today, more then 150 million of Indian's population came from these extremely poor communities and the vast majority still lacks proper housing, medical care, education and employment prospects.BKJKS wants funds such as educational projects Residential Bridge Camp for the Schooling of Adolescent Disadvantaged Girls, drop out children for reschooling, and adult literacy classes in remote block of district Chamoli, so we can make improvement to thousands of peoples lives. In this regards BKJKS want financial support from your side. Expecting your help for this great humanitarian cause. help to ngo for making a shelter home for orphaned street children
written by indu kumar, February 07, 2010
Dear sie/madam

Subject:- help to ngo for making a shelter home for orphaned street children

Dear Sir/Madam

MANAV KALYAN SANSTHAN [MKS] organization is a, not- profit and non -Governmental organization in INDIA. Though the organization is established legally registered on1995 and registration Number 181/jodhpur/94-95 by the state Government of Rajasthan. Established by dedicated professionals who were working in different child focused organization before. Some of them were experienced orphan & vulnerable life so far, the number of street children present in the boundaries of Jodhpur is over 2500 and the situation is really pathetic & inhumane. We are presently looking for financial support, as for our mandate so that we can take up the activities in the benefited of the distressed children. However our present program is running under 'Rajasthan State AIDS control society’, which is based on behavioral change in the street children. Furthermore, we understand that for overall development of street children there untouched, we believe that you and we share same missions & good & you will be happy to extend to us the financial support. If you have any queries about our organization please feel free to have communication & sharing. Anticipating a favorable response
MKS mission is to provide care, love and development for children living on the streets of Jodhpur
We strive to help as many children as possible and focus on those in most urgent need.
We assist children with their immediate challenges, such as homelessness, malnutrition and illness, while also developing their attitudes and skills so they can make a better future for themselves.
We reach over 1000 children daily through our street schools, vocational centers. We want to do more.
MKS is a fully registered, non-profit, non-governmental organization. It was established in 1995 and employs a staff of seventy dedicated local people. Salaries are modest, the office is small, and we stretch our funds to maximize their impact. Unlike many other organizations, mks has little savings, but spends what it gets. The annual budget is about $200,000.
The eleven-member Board is elected bi-annually and consists of doctors, professors, social workers and community members
Mks main activities are the provision of:
•an information/advice help line for children in need
•repatriation of children to their families
•temporary and permanent homes
•medical care and sanitation
•nutrition
•emotional support and counseling
•education
•vocational training

And we are increasing our fund-raising efforts in order that we may help as many street children as possible.

Mission:
•provide care, love and development for
children living on the streets of jodhpur
Philosophy:
•help as many children as possible
•focus on those in greatest need
•do not discriminate or avoid difficult cases
Strategy:
•create a comprehensive system of services to fulfill children’s long-term needs for education, skills, and emotional support, as well as their short-term needs for nutrition, health and shelter
•maximize the impact of this system through: integrating programs, monitoring and improving the quality of service, and seizing opportunities to expand

The organization program components

•Care & Support of orphans & vulnerable children
•Multy sect oral the abused child protection system
•Adoption
•Health
•Street children

• Income generation
•HIV/AIDS
•Gender/Women’s Right/
The end result is to raise reliable, responsible, resourceful and productive citizens through providing and facilitating the education, instruction, training and equipping with skills to the children. Besides, preaching gospel & spiritual based training.
As we mentioned above MKS accomplishing different programs before & now a days there are 500 orphans & vulnerable children assisting by the organization. But, due to financial & material constraints and also lack of getting sufficient training in the domestic & abroad to build organization capacity, we couldn’t running the current & the near future programs properly. Now days a number of beneficiary children increases from time to time. So, we need any partner who is willing to work with us MKS still have no permanent partner who can share it’s burden. Finally, we kindly request your little contribution & visiting our project areas.
God Bless our world

fund for muslim girls education
written by RASHMI PILLAI, January 30, 2010
“Rasta” owes its origin to a group of socially conscious individuals, who were disturbed at the sight of children of school going age, rummaging in garbage heaps or standing at traffic interjections with begging bowls. These social stalwarts congregated and deliberated upon the as to why this section of the society is neglected even after 60 years of our independence. They anonymously were of the opinion that this future asset of the nation should not be wasting their childhood but must hold a pen or pencil in their hands instead of picking rags or holding begging bowls. They all put their head together, exchanged their views and joined their hands to-gather. The result was “Rasta”, a non-governmental, not for profit organization, registered in 1994 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Rasta is guided by a Governing Body, composed of 9 members, who are experienced professionals from different walks of life and different states of India and is assisted by a dedicated strong staff of 35 plus.
Rasta’s present operational areas are Uttar Pradesh and Delhi and in near future Rasta is poised to go national.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Presently contributing to the development of nearly 2000 families in 5 congested clusters - Indira Camp and Mandawali in IP Extension area in East Delhi and Khoda and Sudamapuri villages in Ghaziabad of UP, bordering Delhi.

Access to education for those who would otherwise live and die illiterate
Rasta has so far educated 8000 children and is currently (April 2009) educating 1200 children in 36 Education Centres spread in four locations mentioned earlier. Most of these children are first generation learners and their parents have migrated from remote areas in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhttisgarh, Rajasthan etc
Majority of these children are girls belonging to Muslim community, thanks to the strategy targeted at the educationally backward, packaged in programmes with catchy captions like “Naya Savera”, “Getting Girls to School”, “Education for Minority Girls”, “Ek Nai Kiran” and “Shiksha Saheli”.

Muslim girls shed their purdah to join Rasta School
In keeping with the mission to promote gender equity and women’s development, Rasta launches special drives for enrolling and educating girls. With the support from The Tech Mahindra Foundation, 300 and with the support from The Smile Foundation 100 girls from the minority community are studying in 13 classes in Khora Colony. 80% of these girls are from the muslim community and 20 % from general category. Rasta had a hard time to bring these girls out to our learning centers from the community where all females are always in the purdahs and the influence of Maddrassa is very strong. Another 150 girls are being supported for remedial education by The India Sponsors Foundation in Mandawali and Hassanpur area of East Delhi.

Training and TLM Development
Rasta has been conducting various trainings related to pedagogy , especially on development of Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs). Besides conducting training for its own staff. Rasta has also developed TLMs for levels 1 and 2 of Formal and Non Formal Education and trained staff of other organization in TLM making.

NOW RASTA IS FACING ITS BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS IT NEEDS SUPPORT TO RUN ONE OF ITS SCHOOL FOR MUSLIM GIRLS.PLEASE BE GENEROUS AS THE GIRLS WANTS TO BE EDUCATED.PRESENTLY THE SCHOOL IS RUNNING 13 CLASSES.

written by indu kumar avasthi, December 26, 2009

•awareness, advocacy and research
The temporary homes, vocational centers and counseling services are recent additions to our services. We would like to expand our thriving vocational training program further, and build more homes. We are introducing a Monitoring and Evaluation process across all our programs in order to increase the quality and efficiency of our services. And we are increasing our fund-raising efforts in order that we may help as many street children as possible.

Mission:
•provide care, love and development for
children living on the streets of jodhpur
Philosophy:
•help as many children as possible
•focus on those in greatest need
•do not discriminate or avoid difficult cases
Strategy:
•create a comprehensive system of services to fulfill children’s long-term needs for education, skills, and emotional support, as well as their short-term needs for nutrition, health and shelter
•maximize the impact of this system through: integrating programs, monitoring and improving the quality of service, and seizing opportunities to expand

The organization program components

•Care & Support of orphans & vulnerable children
•Multy sect oral the abused child protection system
•Adoption
•Health
•Street children
•Education
• sponsor ship
• Disability

Fund Raising for Rural Development
written by Dr.Jcob Pulickan, April 20, 2009
Dear Sir/ Mdadam

A Note on Swadeshi Movement in Kerala
The State of Kerala, which is situated at the southern part of India has many successful stories and become a model state in many important aspects. We would like to share with you such an important experiment – the Swadeshi Movement, which has got wider acceptance and public attention among the people of Kerala.
Swadeshi is the concept coined by Mahatma Gandhi for the economic regeneration of the common people. The Swadeshi Movement in Kerala tries to regenerate the Swadeshi Spirit among the people of Kerala, especially among the school students and it has become a very successful experiment, which gives employment to more than 25,000 common people. The movement visualizes the production and distribution of all commodities of daily use by each and everybody. The movement is initiated by the Centre for Gandhian Studies of the University of Kerala and is coordinated by the Gandhi Centre for Rural Development (GCRD Swadeshi Trust).
The Swadeshi Movement is the direct outcome of the extension activities initiated by the Centre for Gandhian Studies of the University of Kerala as an income generating programme. The first activity selected by the Centre was the Soap Making. It became very successful and this led to the starting of the training courses in Soap Products Making. Slowly these training courses became the best training programme in Kerala which necessitated the formation of a separate organisation for coordinating the Swadeshi training programmes, supply of raw materials and allied support items, starting of small production centres and door to door village level marketing network. For this purpose the Centre for Gandhian Studies created the Gandhi Centre for Rural Development – the GCRD Swadeshi Trust.
GCRD Swadeshi Trust
The Gandhi Centre for Rural Development (GCRD) is a Charitable Trust created by the Centre for Gandhian Studies of the University of Kerala for spearheading the Swadeshi movement in accordance with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi for the realisation of Gramaswaraj through Swadeshi and Self-reliance. The activities include development and transfer of appropriate technology for rural development and providing back support to the women and unemployed youth for starting micro enterprises by conducting regular training programmes, supplying raw materials for starting village level production centers and establishing Panchayat level distribution centers.
Swadeshi Soap Making Training Programme
Swadeshi Soap is identified as the symbol of Swadeshi movement by the GCRD Trust as it is an inevitable essential commodity. Moreover technology is simple and acceptable. The handmade soaps popularised by GCRD is 100% natural, 100% vegetarian, 100% coconut Oil used, 100% glycerin retained, non-allergic and skin friendly.
Since soap making and marketing are technical in nature, GCRD is conducting regular three day training programme throughout the State targeting rural man for ensuring the quality of soap and equip them to market the products effectively. The target group include Self-Help Group (SHG), Kudumbashree Units, Neighborhood Groups, Women's Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations etc. In Thiruvananthapuram district, where 'Gandhi Darshan' programme is being organised in all the schools by the Kerala State Gandhi Darshan Samiti, the GCRD is providing all technical and infrastructure support by providing raw materials for the production of soap items and associating themselves with the training programmes aiming to inculcate the concept of Swadeshi Self-Reliance and savings attitude among students.
Training programme is designed to give technical competence in the theoretical and practical aspects of soap making and marketing of soap and allied products. These items include (1) Swadeshi Toilet Soaps (10 items) (2) Swadeshi Washing Soap (3) Swadeshi Detergent Powder - High and Medium quality (4) Swadeshi Dish Wash Powder (5) Swadeshi Cleaning Lotion (6) Swadeshi Liquid Soap
To those successfully completing the course, certificates are also given. At present GCRD has conducted 73 such Training programmes and more than One Thousand Panchayat Level demonstration cum propaganda campaigns throughout the State of Kerala. More than 12,000 people have already completed the Soap Making Training Courses and about 25000 people have engaged in the production and distribution of Swadeshi Soap Products.
Training in Swadeshi Consumer Products
