Although angel investing is yet to reach critical mass in India, the Indian angel is increasingly becoming more risk-taking
Private equity and venture capital investing has boomed in India the past two years, rising from $2.2 billion in 2005 to $7.5 billion in 2006 and $5.6 billion the first six months of 2007, according to the India Venture Capital Association.
Private companies looking for growth capital are spoilt for choice, say both entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. However, a significant hole still exists in Inda at the first rung of the ladder—seed capital.
In the classic venture capital investing model, startups raise a “seed” round of capital, typically under $1 million in the West and considerably less in India, in order to take their business far enough along to attract professional investors. Investors who provide the first round of professional funding (usually called “series A”) are willing to assume high risks to earn high rewards. As a venture proves itself and raises further rounds of capital (“series B” then “series C” and so on), later backers typically pay higher multiples for an ownership stake because they are taking on lower risks. Few Indian venture investing partnerships specialize in series A funding, and only a handful are willing to provide the initial seed capital that launches a company. The rewards to early investors can be high, but professional investors can’t put enough money to work to justify the amount of time and help that a new enterprise needs.
If it’s difficult for entrepreneurs to find an initial source of funding, how will they ever develop their companies to the point where they are attractive to series A investors? Without a ready supply of capital at the incubation stage, India’s entrepreneurial boom could be throttled—if an inadequate number of firms get off the ground, there will be too few prospects for professional investors to put to work the capital they have raised, let alone put more money into India. Indeed, one reason why so many bright Indians have started their companies in places like Silicon Valley instead of India is that seed capital is much easier to raise in the US.Even in North America and Europe, however, few professional investors provide seed funding for ventures. They enjoy nonetheless a steady supply of prospective A-round deals because entrepreneurs are able to tap into their personal wealth or that of their family and friends. Quite a few entrepreneurs in the West have even financed their companies via credit cards or by mortgaging their homes.
In addition, a significant number of fast-growing ventures have received their initial funding from “angel” investors. An angel is usually a wealthy individual who invests part of his or her personal fortune in private ventures. Most angels were once successful entrepreneurs themselves, so they bring not only cash but also advice, connections, and even temporary management help to a startup. Accordingly, such investors are eagerly sought after even when a company founder could raise money from other sources.
Some experts have estimated that more people worth at least $1 million live in Mumbai than reside in the entire west coast of the US. Western academics often study how certain ethnic communities in India such as the Marwaris or Jains efficiently fund businesses through networks of trust. So why do entrepreneurs and venture capitalists both say that a lack of seed funding, especially from angel investors, is the biggest constraint today on India’s entrepreneurial expansion?
Vishal Gondal, the successful founder of Indiagames, launched his venture in 1999 when he was just 23, with funds from early-stage investor Pravin Gandhi, among others. In 2004, he sold an 80% stake to TOM Online, one of China’s leading Internet companies. He says, “While venture capital funding is growing with billions of dollars entering the country, there is not enough seed stage capital. High net worth individuals are happy investing in real estate and stocks, and there is no real infrastructure for investors to find the right startups. India has no real ‘hot bed’ for startups, like MIT and Stanford in the US. 80% of IIT graduates are happy taking up plum jobs with great salaries, so it’s harder for investors to find quality growth ventures.”

Adds Gandhi, “Even though networks like the Band of Angels exist, they are not very well-organized and investing in startups is not necessarily their members’ first priority. Most investors would rather invest through private equity funds and not get involved operationally.” Many entrepreneurs contend that wealthy Indian investors tend to have a short-term mentality and look for returns within 18 months, so they prefer to put their money into stocks, bonds and real estate instead of startups.

(CONSTANT TORQUE RECEPROCATING IC ENGINE)
In all IC engines built so far, the reciprocating motion of the connecting rod
is converted in to rotary motion for wheel through crankshaft. This was most appropriate technology when the engine was invented. However, with continuously rising fuel prices around the world, many attempts are being made for improving engine efficiency.
I have studied existing technology in detail & have found out following disadvantages with existing system.
DISADVANTAGES IN EXISTING SYSTEM
1. The torque generated is always in a sine wave form.
2. Although, fuel combustion exerts tremendous force on piston from TDC to BDC (can be considered constant for any particular power stroke); all of it is never converted in to desired torque. When piston is near TDC or BDC, the force is wasted in compressing / stretching crankshaft radial arms towards / away from crankshaft bearings. Due
to this repetitive cyclic force, crankcase is required to be designed adequately strong & robust for bearing non converted force from Pistons.
3. Due to sine wave nature of torque conversion, maximum torque is available ONLY AT CRANKSHAFT ROTATION AT MULTIPLES OF 90 deg..
For all other times, the torque available is LESS THAN MAXIMUM POSSIBLE.
4. For a 4 cylinder engine with cranks placed at 90 deg. apart & firing order 1,3,2,4; cylinder 1 (say) has power stroke from 0 deg. to 180 deg.of crankshaft rotation; then other cylinders will fire as under
• Cylinder 1: 0 deg. to 180 deg..
• Cylinder 3: 180 deg. to 360 deg..
• Cylinder 2: 270 deg. to 450 deg..
• Cylinder 4: 450 deg. to 630 deg..
For cylinder 1, next power stroke starts at 720 deg. only & hence it can be seen that from 630 deg. to 720 deg., there is no power available in any of the cylinders. Engine has to cross this zone only by means of inertia of the over all system.
Considering all these disadvantages, I have developed a new concept in IC Engine, which WILL NOT HAVE ANY OF ABOVE DISADVANTAGES.
I have named it TEJJ IC ENGINE having following advantages:
ADVANTAGES OF TEJJ IC ENGINE
1. This Engine WILL PRODUCE CONSTANT TORQUE OVER ALL
POSITIONS OF CRANKSHAFT ROTATION. Torque wave will be a
rectangular one.
2. The torque will be comparable to that of ELECTRIC MOTOR.
3. As no force from piston will be wasted in exerting undue force on crankshaft bearings, crankcase design can be made relatively lighter.
4. Torque available will be EQUAL TO MAXIMUM POSSIBLE TORQUE of existing sine wave torque at 90 deg. multiples.
5. This engine can be easily made in existing plants since It is only addition / modification of components & rearrangement of existing engine using ALREADY PROVEN COMPONENTS ELSE WHERE.
6. No new technology yet to be tasted is used for this invention.
7. Work done PER POWER STROKE of ENGINE WILL BE ALMOST 55%
HIGHER THAN THAT IN AN EXISTING SINE WAVE IC ENGINE.
8. This will lead to TREMENDOUS INCREASE OF ENGINE EFFICIENCY / MILAGE FROM VEHICLE.
9. This Engine can be used for all IC engine applications as at present.
10. This Engine can be used for all 2-stroke / 4-stroke engines running on ANY FUEL.
