Startup Weekend is a registered not-for-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington, USA. It organizes 54-hour weekend events during which groups of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups.
Typical Startup Weekend (@swinindia on Twitter; http://on.fb.me/w0lpSE on Facebook) participants are expected to build a prototype for their business idea and validate their revenue and business models with the help of seasoned entrepreneurs, mentors and investors - all of this in 54 hours! No wonder, real startups like LaunchRock are born out of such weekends. Numerous other people quit their jobs to work on their ideas full-time. It’s tough, it’s taxing, its ambitious and its hundred percent no-nonsensical. As they rightly say - No Talk, ALL Action! Not only do you get to talk to seasoned and experienced veterans of the industry, you also get to show them exactly what you can do and how, and believe me, that is worth more than all the talks combined.
Startup Weekend has inherent advantage over other events in startup community. Traditional startup events are built around talks by investors, angel investors and seasoned entrepreneurs, followed by a networking session in which the audience gets a chance to interact with the speakers. And the fact is that all people do at such events is talk, talk and talk. Where does all the execution go? Think for yourself.
And, as an organizer for Startup Weekend , we have also learnt another thing –founders of startups can use this event as a weekend-long interview for potential employees or co-founders.
So if you want to explore your idea, or are looking to expand your team or wish to be a part of this eco-system, come participate in a Startup Weekend near you. This might just be the best platform to find people who match the skillsets of those you need, and then maybe do an undercover interview to discover those traits of your teammates that traditional interviews can never bring to the surface. Innovative, isn’t it? Well, that’s what these weekends are all about!
The first Startup Weekend in India was organized in Delhi in March 2011. Since then, Startup Weekend has been organized five times in four different cities in this country.
The Mumbai weekend is happening on 10-12th Feb’2012 followed by eighth and ninth editions to be held in Chennai and Delhi in March and April respectively. Please also let us know if you would like to cover any of the StartUp Weekend.
