Posting from koothattukulam over a patchy data card connection

Posted by: Krishna Kumar in On the Website

I am currently in a small town called Koothattukulam, in Ernakulam district of Kerala. Been here for the past week and will be here for till the end of the month and a bit beyond. This agricultural town full of rubber estates is a microcosm in itself.

Yesterday, I went through almost all the bookshops and magazine stalls in town and could not find any English magazines. The most popular magazine seems to befittingly be one about agriculture, followed by a couple of women's magazines. The largest shops in the market are, in true Kerala fashion, jewelery shops! Two large sanitary ware shops, almost empty of customers are witness to the slowing down in the real estate and construction business. One of the medical shops in town sells Allopathy, Ayurveda and even veterinary medicines, all from the same counter. Another shop nearby sells feed for rabbits, hens and cattle.

Come evening and the smell of frying chicken, coming from the many restaurants that sell what is probably the state's favourite dinner dish - fried chicken and porotta - permeates the main road.

I am making this post using my laptop and datacard. The connect is patchy and tends to get disrupted even if I so much as shift the orientation of the laptop. But a "ping yahoo.com -t" in an open command window in the background helps prolong the connect (thanks to Ankur Jaiswal of Cyberspace for reminding about that old trick from the days of the shell account).

Using this patchy connection, I have so far been able to discuss, finish and send out a 33 page RFP for a set of websites, keep up with the election results, research and finish an article for the next issue of DARE, update this blog and generally be in touch with the outside world.

Not bad, I guess. Only, the GPRS connect on my cellphone is more stable and faster!

Nice post indeed.
I am surprised by the lack of Net availability at Koothatukulam. Must be one of the off days of the network!
The datacard might have bahaved wonky - probably because of the Rubber plantations from where the web was being accessed?

The Jewellery Stores are indeed representative of the scene across the state.
Like in other towns, there might also be the swanky branded Umbrella Showrooms as well....Popy, Colombo etc. A truly unique feature of this dear state that is not found elsewhere.
Wishing you a pleasant stay of holiday cum work...
