Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 1B has gone out of service after 40 years of non-stop operations and witnessing millions of passengers flying day in day out. Terminal 1B came into existence ever since civil air operations shifted to Palam from Safdarjung airport in 1962 to cater to the increased number of travelers. The terminal used to handle all flight operations - both domestic and international arrivals and departures. However, new terminals kept getting added up with increasing air traffic. Terminal 1C was built to cater to the domestic arrivals; a new terminal was built for international operations (T2), and an additional domestic departure terminal 1A were also added up over the years.

With the number of air travelers increasing by leaps and bounds in the first decade of the 21st century, a need was felt to have a much bigger terminal with modern facilities. This is what transpired the construction of the new terminal 1D. It was open for use finally in May 2009, and airline companies were persuaded to shift operations from 1B to 1D. Terminal 1D has now become the scene of more departures, and it is the base of all flights except those of Air India, MDLR, Jagson and Go Air - all of which now depart from Terminal 1A.
Another terminal, called Trminal3, is also under construction to cater to the needs of more tourists during the upcoming Common Wealth Games in 2010.
