Begging is considered to be one of the most unfortunate work to be in. People generally have the perception that such a work does not provide a decent living to people who are engaged in it as begging cannot provide them enough earnings. However a simple analysis will leave us with stark results about the revenue associated with it.
A beggar was begging at a traffic signal in Delhi. When he was offered some productive work instead of begging, he simply replied that other activities for which he will be hired are less paid. According to him, begging allow him to earn almost 5 times of what any other job would pay him.
A simple calculation can help us out to know that how much he earns approximately in a month. Traffic signal on which that beggar was begging remains red for 90 seconds and green for 30 seconds. So in one hour, 30 stops (red lights and on which a beggar can do begging) are there. In 12 hours 360 stops are there. According to that beggar, on each stoppage he is able to get atleast Re one and sometimes even Rs. five. According to him, on an average he earns Rs. two in each stop (red light) on a lower side. So it comes to Rs 720 for a day (360 stops * Rs. 2). Also let us assume that he may not beg at all stoppages due to breaks and rest and only begs during 320 stoppages. Even by this, he will be able to earn Rs.640 a day and Rs.19200 a month.
What is left with a beggar is a different issue and is not the part of the analysis. However important point to note is that a work which is associated with very low income often prove to be contrary. Small revenue but large number of transactions is the key element here. There are many activities with similar turnover and revenue which at the same time are high in profile and are socially accepted. So business opportunity can be found even in items which are priced very less.
